Lewis Fashions Through the Ages

Lewis Fashions Through the Ages

May 7th 2009

A new and innovative intergenerational arts project is currently underway involving communities throughout the Western Isles.

Na Mo Chuid Aodaich (meaning “in my clothes”) has been led by Pròiseact nan Ealan (PnE) – the Gaelic Arts Agency – in conjunction with Crossroads Care Lewis. The project will use Gaelic drama, song, story and music to explore the history and influences of fashion over the last century.

This pilot community project, to be held at eight venues across the Western Isles , will start at North Lochs Community Centre, Leurbost on 15th May at 7pm. The Lochs production will star local performers Maggie Smith (Lochs) and Eilidh Johnstone (Point) as well as local musicians and singers who will be named next week.

The project is being run in each community by volunteers and has engaged people of all ages. Each area has collected vintage clothes from the community, following a local appeal, and these will be modelled at performances by younger members of each community. The stories and background attached to the clothes that are being modelled will be told by the owners of the clothes, so that each story will be specific to that area and no two performances will be the same.

Instead of selling tickets donations are requested and all proceeds will go towards Crossroads Care Lewis. The charity, which provides relief for family carers and supports people with disabilities, has recently been commended for the quality of care and support offered, and the excellent quality of staffing, management and leadership. With networks across the Western Isles they have played a key part in ensuring different areas get involved.

Chrissie Macleod, Manager of Crossroads Lewis, said: "We have been greatly encouraged by this fund-raising initiative by Proiseact Nan Ealan and by the enthusiasm shown by them and by the communities hosting this production. Things are going really well – it’s something fresh and exciting, involving all ages with each item of clothing having its own story to tell.

“Evenings will be unique to each locality featuring local models, performers and singers. We don't think anyone will be disappointed - so please come along and by your donation help us offer more care hours to those in need in our communities."

Although tickets aren’t necessary organisers are trying to gauge numbers ahead of the event so that enough refreshments can be provided – so please contact PnE’s office on (01851 704493) or local organiser Ishbel Macleod (01851 860418) to confirm if you would like to attend.

As well as PnE and Crossroads, the intergenerational project has involved a whole range of groups and individuals from local communities – including Crossroads Macmillan, Community Education, Community Associations in each area, Girls Clubs, Sunshine Clubs, Young at Heart Clubs, and a wide selection of volunteers from each area. PnE are truly indebted to the volunteers for the huge amount of talent, enthusiasm and commitment they have brought to the project.

Financial support has so far come from Scottish Arts Council, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Comunn na Gàidhlig, and MG ALBA.
