Berneray Community Hall is the place to be on the evening of the 6th March 2009, for what promises to be an excellent event to launch Donald MacKillop’s book, Coille an Fhàsaich. The book has already had successful launches in both Inverness and Glasgow, and the Comunn Eachdraigh Bheàrnaraigh feel it is important for the book to have a Berneray launch as well.
Published towards the end of 2008, this book provides a unique and richly-historical autobiographical account of life in the island of Berneray eight decades ago. Written by one of Berneray’s best-known living sons (born in 1926), the book includes memories of Donald’s childhood and schooldays; seven months spent working as an assistant to shepherds on Pabbay; and leaving home for the mainland. It also includes many of his Gaelic songs and poems including his award-winning Coille an Fhàsaich, complete with translation by Anne Lorne Gillies, who was also the editor of the book.
The Comunn Eachdraigh, who are hosting the launch event, are delighted to be able to announce that Anne Lorne Gillies will be present at the event herself, to make a presentation about the book and Donald’s life and works. In the course of the evening, she will also sing some of Donald’s songs.
We will also welcome our special guest for the evening the acclaimed Gaelic singer Jenna Cumming, who will sing a variety of songs. She will headline a ceilidh which will take place during the second half of the evening, also involving local singers and musicians.
Copies of Coille an Fhàsaich will be available to buy during the evening, and there will be a break for refreshments. Entry will be by donation – all proceeds to support the work of Berneray Historical Society.
The event starts at 7.30pm on Friday 6th March and will be held at Berneray Community Hall.
