On the 24th October 2008 a tribute was paid to one of Gaeldom's finest actors, the late Simon Mackenzie. The sold out performance served as a memorial to Simon, but also as a kick start to the Simon Mackenzie Trust, which has been set up to support young Gaelic actors.
The evening was a touching tribute, but stayed away from the overly sentimental. Instead artists including Jenna Cummings, Alyth MacCormack, Ishbel MacAskill and Harry Nicoll sang songs interspersed with their own memories of Sìm - there was more than one story that demonstrated Sim's kindness and patience.
As well as music there was poetry and drama, and humour that had tears (of laughter) rolling down our faces.
It was a fantastic night and a fitting tribute - the first of many which are to be held over the next couple of years to raise money for the trust. As there is no shortage of artists willing and keen to perform in Simon's name we can be assured of many a grand fundraising night in the future.
