Dave Martin

December 2006 - Daibhidh Martin is currently a GASD funded writer in residence at An Lanntair, currently working with Sir E Scott School in Harris, writing a Gaelic play for Mach an a Deich. We caught up to see how it’s going.

Tell us a bit about Mach an a Deich...

It's a new festival of 10 minute Gaelic plays, which will be on for a week in March 2007. I'm writing one as part of my residency but also hope to submit a separate one from myself.

What was the last Gaelic arts event you went to?

I was at Ceol 's Craic at the CCA recently, performing with Iain Morrison (from Crash My Model Car), and Martin Macintyre was reading from his new book. I thought it was a great event and a great venue, it was also very cool but surreal to be on Sauchiehall Street watching women waulking.

Do you work with Iain on an ongoing basis?

Iain and i have been friends for a long time and started collaborating my writing with his music over two years ago. We perfromed at the Arches for Celtic Connections in 2005 and on Tom Morton's radio show on Radio Scotland. We have also performed various other venues together including Ceol 's Craic. We are going to be performing together at this coming Celtic Connections at the Royal Concert Hall on 26th January.

What inspires you to write?

I'm constantly inspired by life and how such small things can have huge impacts when you stop and look. I'm also very inspired by the sea, surprisingly enough!!

  • It’s not cool but I like it…...Dolly Parton

  • I like to read... different things all the time

  • You wouldn’t know it but... i love snowboarding (apart from this year when i dislocated my collar-bone in France)

  • The soundtrack to my life... ...would definitely have a little bit of everything, mostly acoustic singer/songwriter stuff but also Dolly Parton and Metallica. Sometimes you just have to!

  • This Christmas I will be ....at home, writing, eating and hiding my credit card!

  • All i want for Christmas ....is as many of those small sausages wrapped in bacon as i can eat. I don't know why we only eat them at new year, they're amazing!
